Most folks place the Indo-Pacific Sailfish at the top of the swift-swimmers list but with the caveat that 2/3rds of our planet is water and we’ve hardly explored any of it. Who knows what zippy-critter might lurk in the depths? Also keep in mind that it’s pretty tough to speed-rate a fish. But, of the known fishes in the world, the sailfish holds the record at 68mph (drawing out 300 feet of fishing line in 3 seconds!)

Other fast fishes worth mentioning are the Mako shark (bursts up to 50mph), and the Wahoo (because I love the name) at 48mph. For a list of top ten fastest fish, check-out Rob and Clare’s Travel Almanac.

Nigel WAS absolutely right. The fastest fish wass a motor pike. The fastest fish on three wheels wass a motor pike with a side carp. Both speed records were recently shattered by a rocket gar, which subsequently relinquished its record to the only real fish listed in this response… the sail fish.

Thanks for the laugh, though, Nigel.
